Hi Guys.i'm A Novice When It Comes To Boat Engines, but I Recently Fitted A New Starter To My 3.0l Cobra Engine.started It Up And Noticed Oil Pressure Was Not Quite What It Normally Is.thought It May Have Been Due To The Boat Being Laid Up For The Winter And May Have Been A Bit Oiled Up Etc.anyway Todayi Went Out Oday For The First Time,(i Live In Devon Uk), Went Out Fine, Then Noticed Engine Started To Labour Then Picked Up Again My Wife Then Said Whats This Smoke? Looked At The Engine (she's A 1988 So Not The Youngest Lady On The Water). Next Thing Engine Starts To Die ,oil Pressure Gone, Looked Under Engine Cover Lots Of Burnt Oil Smoke, temp Gauge Through Roof. Thankfully Got A Tow In From A Passing Fishing Boat.
Initial Thoughts Guys, isit As Bad As I Think It Is!:(

Re: Please Help Think I Have Big Problem!

SHE HAS RAN FINE IN THE PAST, AT THE END OF LAST SEASON I REMEMBER PERFORMANCE DROPPING SLIGHTLY BUT I PULLED HER OUT OF THE WATER FOR THE WINTER THEN. THE OIL HAS DEFINITELY BEEN COOKED AS WHEN I PULLED THE STOPPER OUT OF THE OIL FILLER THE SMOKE WAS BILLOWING AROUND INSIDE.IAMGRATEFULFOR ANY INITIAL DIAGNOSIS THOUGH I SUSPECT ITS A SERIOUS PROBLEM,POSS ENGINE SEIZURE THOUGH I HOPE NOT, THATS JUST ME BEING A MASTER OF DOOM AND GLOOM!

I suspect your Right,+ your motor Might be Junk.......
A Compression,+ Leak-down Test will give you an Idea of just How Bad it Is............

IN ANSWER TO THE WATER FLOWIT SEEMED FINE NOTHING UNUSUAL THERE I THINK THE OIL PRESSURE GAUGE WAS THE GIVE AWAY. WOULD I BE RIGHT IN SUSPECTING ENGINE REBUILD UGGHH!( IN OTHER WORDS BIG MONEY).

Further To My Last, If It Is As Serious As I Suspect What Parts Are Likelytobe Terminal.i Gather The Pistons Will Be Done For, Hence A Rebore And New Rings, Possibly Cyl Head Gasket Anything Else You Can Think Of.

Regarding The Compression Test.if The Engine Is Seized Then I Suspect The Pistons Will Not Move Hence There Will Be No Compression, Or Am I Stating The Obvious.

Sorry To Sound Clueless, But How Do I Do A Leak Down Test.

Re: Please Help Think I Have Big Problem!

Just do your compression test first. Depending on the numbers a leak down test may not even be required. If the engine is that cooked, the compression test will tell you what you do not want to know, that it is rebuild time.

Good luck and have a great day,

Rob.

But if he lost oil pressure, he will have damaged the main bearings. A compression test won't tell him anything about the state of the crank and its bearings, it will let him know if the engine turns over, but he can do that without a compression gauge (just turn the ignition key).. If he was running with little or no oil pressure that engine will be toast..

It'll have to be Torn Down to see What, if Anything is Salvageable........

You probably should Pull it,+ bring it to your Machinest for evaluation............

THANKS GUYS I THINK THEWORD TOAST IS VERY APT ON THIS OCCASION.THE QUESTION NOW , DEPENDING ON DAMAGE IS .
1. IS IT WORTH THE WHILE TRYING TO REPAIR DAMAGE
2 PUT A RECON UNIT IN.
UNFORTUNATELY I LIVE IN A COUNTRY BETTER KNOWN AS RIP OFF LAND.THE PRICE FOR ANY MARINE RELATED PARTS ARE EXTORTIONATE TO SAY THE LEAST.I AM GOING TO GET IT EXAMINED AND GET AN OPINION FROM A MARINE ENGINEER.WILL LET YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS. ONE THING , I GATHER THE MARINE LEG,PROP DRIVE ASSY ETC SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN DAMAGED AND THAT THE DAMAGE WILL HAVE BEEN RESTRICTED TO THE POWER PLANT.WHAT DO YOU GUYS RECKON.:confused:
