I have a 1969 evinrude 55 hp and don't know if the cooling system is working correctly. I took the lower unit off and verified the pump and impeller are in good shape. In fact the impeller looks perfect, the impeller woodruf key is in place so the impeller turns with the shaft and should be pumping water. I am however really confused b/c there are two tubes coming out of the water pump. One tube is the discharge from the water pump. The other tube appears to be some type of hoe water return from the motor, but it goes back into the the same cavity the motor draws cool inlet water from, wierd.
If I blow into the connecting tube in the upper unit that appears to be connected to the water pump discharge, air returns through the other "return" tube in the upper unit. If I blow into what appears to be the return tube in the upper unit there must be some type of check valve b/c there is no return flow from the tube in the upper unit that connects to the water pump discharge tube.
When I run the motor with the water muff on I see no flow from any type of P--- hole and the motor seems to heat up pretty quick.
Just for reference here are some pictures of my water pump. As you can see there are 2 tubes. The closest tube goes straight through the water pump housing and down into the cavity that intakes water for the motor, I am calling this the return tube. The second tube, the one futhest away in the picture is the water pump discharge tube.
Also as you move to stern in this picture from the water pump you can see channel the exhaust travels through and then the space where I assume the hot water should return from the motor, but doesn't.

In the second picture you can see what I am assuming are the cooling water p--- holes. Nothing is coming out of these holes however.

Do I have some type of blockage in the motor how do I verify water is cooling the motor? Finally where should the water return? It makes no sense to me that the hot water would return the same passage as where the pump draws cool inlet water. I have also never seen a motor without some sort of p--- hole to verify the pump is working.
Can anyone help diagnose this one? What wrong with my water system?
Thanks,
Bryan
