Hey guys I'm new here I have a question , I have a 1972 Johnson 9.5 I rebuilt car last year and I changed out core plugs it was my first time doing the core plugs and the bigger one I hit a little to hard I think and after running it for a while it starts flooding out and leaking fuel at the top of the card out the over flow hole do u think this is the reason or u think my float is getting stuck open... If the core plug leaks will that make it flood out?

No likely junk in the seat, float not floating, or getting hung up on the gasket. Something like that.

Ok I'll check that out ....so I'm clear on the core plug I can rule that out

If your carb is flooding, it is likely due to the float either sticking or the seat is not flat enough.

think you are concerned that you did some damage somewhere when you replaced the expansion plug at the top of the carb(?) guess that is possible (if unlikely) -- need to disassemble the carb anyway to troubleshoot, so can check to satisfy concerns. When you pull out the float again, check the valve underneath and clean it. Make sure the float is in correctly, and sits level.

Edit: not sure there is an expansion plug on that carb, in thinking about it -- sounded like that's what you were describing. Also, the jet at the bottom of the carb should be squeaky clean, so should check that -- might be able to clean without removing the jet.

There are core plugs on the side of the carb body. Set them with a socket extension and hammer with a few swift whacks. Then, I seal them. I use my 3M 847, but your wifes clear nail polish will work well.

In theory they shouldn't need it. However, try troubleshooting that down the road. SO, I just do it in case there is a leak. It is a hard thing to find.

Shocking Purple also works....and it is easy to see the coverage.....plus there is lots, she changed her mind and doesn't like the colour. :)

Yeah it's a pretty much brand new float I had it stick on me one time buy everything was very clean when I took the car apart and turned it upside down it sits level but some times if I flip back and forth it jams down cause of the little metal peace with the rubber point comes of to far and it cocks to the side and jams the float open...how can I fix that

Your drop is set too low. Push the metal tab in on the float arm, to prevent it from dropping that far. I cannot remember off hand what the float drop is on a 9.5, if someone doesn't know off hand, Ill look it up. I just do it by eye.

Is it the original or OEM or an aftermarket ?
Sometimes they aren't an exact match.

I'm not sure it's a cork float and its right side up and I never adjusted the down drop that's the little metal tap that sticks out a little bit that's what u have to adjust ? Cause that sounds like it would work cause it only does it sometimes ....and If the core plug leaks will it make it hard to adjust my low speed idle needle?

You never answered the question.

Is it the original? = Did you put a new one in when you "rebuilt the carb" (that means different things to different people).
OEM = if you put a new one in, was it genuine OMC?
Aftermarket = anything other than OMC.

If it is the original cork float, there could be several contributing factors.

If it's leaking anywhere, you are probably not going to be able to properly adjust the low speed setting.

Who manufactured the float (above question)? Bombardier? Sierra?
