Re: PLEASE HELP WITH THIS PROBLEM

You said you ran TWO new wires from the sender to the fuel gauge. Why two -- only one is needed. The gauge needs +12V when the key is on. The sender wire connects to the sender terminal and the ground terminal connects to the ground terminal on any other gauge. The instrument light can also hook to the light terminal on any other gauge. The fuel sender does need to be grounded.

Re: PLEASE HELP WITH THIS PROBLEM

Cajun,

Some years ago I had come across a '68 Century 19' and of course it had an inoperative fuel indicating system. I checked several sources and found that it had a 30 gallon fuel tank and verified that by accessing the tank and looking at the data plate.

I installed an aftermarket tank level indicator and found that without adjusting the float position, the quantity level was inaccurate. I emptied the tank and used a long wooden dowel rod to fabricate a fuel level "stick". By measuring from the bottom of the tank to the point at the top that I considered to be the "full" point, I marked the stick accordingly.

The empty point was determined by calculating the distance between the bottom of the pickup stand pipe and the bottom of the tank. I added another inch to that measurement to make sure I had a bit of a reserve. Halfway between those two points I marked the 1/2 tank level.

By ensuring the tank and boat were "on the level" so to speak, I could add fuel to the tank little by little and meaasure the fuel level with the stick. This in turn was used to adjust the fuel level sending unit from empty to full. It took a few tries to get the desired results but it has work great for the last 19 years.

By the way, I still carry that stick on the boat just in case the sending unit or the gauge die and untimely death.

My tank was shaped almost rectangularly with no odd offsets or anything so it was pretty straight forward. Some of the newer boats have custom formed tanks that are unusually shaped and therefore will have non-linear fill rates. All that really counts though is knowing when the tank is full and when it is almost (reserve) empty.

Good Luck!8)

Just to be clear, disconnect the sender wire at the sender and turn on the key. If the needle doesn't move, good so far. Touch the wire to the sender ground wire and if the needle pegs, the gauge is good. Connect the wire back to the sender and if the needle pegs, the sender is shorted.

They usually fail the other way (no movement), but oh well. Disconnect the batteries to avoid sparks while replacing. The screws look equally distributed, but they aren't. You have to make sure all holes line up when installing the replacement. Instructions and a new gasket will come with it.

NO SMOKING! ;)

You'll have to adjust the length of the lever to the depth of the tank. Subtract an inch from your depth to allow an inch of reserve once the gauge shows Empty.
