I recently bought an 84 Bayliner Capri with the Volvo Penta aq125a engine and aq270 outdrive....this is my first boat....I've been intune with car mechanics for years but am new to boat mechanics. I recently tried to pull the outdrive to change bellows and what not, however when I got everything off and ready to pull out, the gear shaft would not come out of the transom housing ...nothing I do will get it out. I had to disconnect the gear box from the lower unit and drain gear oil just to get the lower part out. And now I'm just stuck on what to do next. Here's some pictures to better understand what I mean. Any help is appreciated.

Might be seized to the flex plate splines or the pilot bearing. I know you don't want to hear this, but you may have to pull the motor. That shaft should slide right out without a fight.

Seized into the gimbal bearing maybe ? I'd rather not pull the engine if I don't have to that's the last resort....I was thinking maybe get a slide hammer and try getting it out that way? From the looks of the outboard it hasn't been serviced in years . Guy I got it from seemed ok then got shady soon as I bought it so idk when the last time that drive was taken out. Wasn't hardly any grease on the ujoint under the bellow and theses mussels and stuff all over the outboard so it clearly wasn't well maintained .

the shaft doesn't come out with the ujoints. the ujoints have a female end that goes over the driveshaft. however, yes it's corroded onto the driveshaft. slidehammer may work...I've never had to do it. I would also assume the driveshaft bearings are bad as well. get yourself a manual.

If you can separate the universal joint at the forward connection then you may be able to use a slide hammer to remove the female splined section.
with a hooked tool pull the rear seal then with some snap ring pliers remove the rings. The shaft is threaded so that a slide hammer can be used to pull it out. There is only 1 bearing. If the shaft is rusted in the damper plate then you will have to use a 1”hole saw on the outer perimeter of the flywheel housing to gain access to the 3 bolts that mount the plate to the flywheel.
Then remove the engine, sometimes the shaft splines are so rusted that you will need a press and heat to separate the damper from the shaft.
The seals universal joints and bearing are common and can be had at any bearing supply house.
Keep us posted.

So my next question is what if I don't remove the ujoint spindle, and just leave it in there and then disconnect the gear box and change bellows that way ? I don't see this boat getting more than 5 more good years out of it if that so I'd rather not put a **** load of time and money into it. I mean it all works, it's just stuck inside there.

I don't think you'll be able to put on a new bellows without pulling the upper gear box. if it all works as it should, you could get some use out of it, but if you don't want to spend money or time on this boat, cut your losses and buy an aluminum boat with an outboard
