Hi. I have a 1978 Merc 115 outboard. I'm trying to get the T&T going but all I get is a click in either direction. Lets say we're starting from scratch. I have the fluid and assume it gos in the screw hole on the side. My main question I guess is where do the 2 brown or salmon wires coming from the motor bunched with the hydraulic hoses connect? Also what are they for, limit switch, maybe? Where do I connect the trim gauge?Would there be a sending unit on the motor or do I need to buy a seperate sending unit? I have completely restored this old boat and motor and the T&T is my only hold up so any help would be greatly appreciated. By the way it's a strong click not from a weak battery.

Hi Schmoedog, Congrats on restoring your boat. Why don't you do a simple test first to check the solenoids for the T&T. If you are hearing a click in both directions it sounds like the T&T is hoked up right. Make sure your battery is charged fully too.
You should be able to trace the wires back from the T&T unit to two small electrical devices under the emgine cowling. These will be the solenoids. There should be two large wires and one small wire hooked to each one. Take a pair of pliers or large wire with the insulation stripped on each end and jump across both large wire on the solenoids one at a time. If this causes the T&T to operate then replace the solenoids. This is a very common problem with the T&T units.
Now if it doesn't work you may be missing primary voltage and only have control voltage going to the solenoids. The small wire comes from your T&T switch and causes the solenoids to activate when you hit the switch. One of the large wires will tie in on your main electrical buss or hook straight to the + on the battery. If you have a meter check to see if you have 12V on the large wire on the solenoid coming from the battery at the solenoid. If no voltage here then trace that wire down and hook it up to a 12V supply.

Good luck :)

Re: Please I'm stupid on Merc T&T

Thanks for the fast reply,Down South! My solonoids are mounted right on my pump. I did that jump test and nothing happened. I got the motor off of another boat last year and it all worked then. I have pos and neg connected the same way it was before. The wires I'm refering to coming from the motor just go to the clamp where the moter fastens to the boat and go into what looks like a switch or sensor? They are brown or salmon in color and about 16 guage. Would low fluid cause the pump not to run at all? Anyway I hope you stay with me on this. I've got some fishin' & skiin' to do in a couple of weeks. Thanks again'Schmoedog

Re: Please I'm stupid on Merc T&T

I was thinking your motor might have the solenoids mounted at the pump after I replyed. Some of the Mercs have them mounted on the side of the engine. I have a 90 hp Merc that has them mounted to the side of the engine and I have replaced both of them with the same symtoms. Sorry it took me so long to answer. I just got home from work an hour or so ago (4 Hr drive from work). And I stopped off at Sam's club to pick up a few things.
Anyway back to the problem. You tried to jump across the main terminals of each solenoid with no luck. Ok, make sure you have voltave (12V) at both of the solenoids. One of the big wires on each solenoid should be hot. I mean it should have 12 volts on it. Check them with your meter if you have one or an automotive test light. If there is no voltage there then your primary lead is not hooked up or it's not hooked up right. Where is the + lead hooked up at. If it worked before you changed the motor from one boat to the other I think it should still work if connected properly.

Good luck :)

Re: Please I'm stupid on Merc T&T

Down south, thats a long haul. I complain about 1 hour round trip to work. I have primary power now that I put a fuse in the line,DUH. But now I keep blowing 30 amp fuses. I uncapped the cylinders and managed to pump them full but I blow fuses under pressure and even without pressure. Got any thoughts?

Schmoedog, Sorry it took me so long to reply, I've been at the camp for the past few days. Far as the drive goes, I work in the Gulf of Mexico on what's called a 7&7 hitch. I work 7 days then come home for 7 days so I only have that drive once per week.
Have you been able to resolve the T&T problem. You said you were blowing fuses. Is the T&T trying to operate before the fuse blows...Are you sure you have the right amp fuse?

Re: Please I'm stupid on Merc T&T

Schmoedog, I had a t/t pump that quit on me, solenoids worked fine. The motor terminals had power to it but would not turn. I pulled the whole pump out and took it to a Alternator/Starter repair shop and they threw in some new brushes and it works like a champ now. You might try tapping the side of the motor while someone energizes the solenoid and see if this will get the motor to work. If it does, I would have new brushes put in, there in-expensive. Hope this helps. Stu
