Even though they are long out of business and parts are getting harder to find, which outdrives would you Marine Mechanics say were the best built by OMC? Best meaning durability & serviceability. Thanks for your opinion!

Re: Please rate OMC outdrives

It all depends - even though I have only had one for a few years, I have had no issues with my cobra drive... except for maintenance issues from the previous owner, that I ended up correcting myself.

OMC had fallen in the same light as Hyundai did, they built a bad product once... and it tainted them forever... I can tell you that there are 1000's and 1000's of OMC powered craft on the water with no issues.. and that includes very old models... stringers, cobras, SX drives... and with the proper maintenance from a knowledgeable person, they are good power plants and will last for a long time...

but be certain that anyone that has had a problem with an OMC drive will come in here and completely take the other side of the issue... and that is their right... but remember that people don't really take care of a boat as well as they do a car... because they are not in it every day, and the maintenance some times takes a back seat until something breaks... then it's the manufacturers fault. almost every time a picture is posted on here of someone's OMC engine or outdrive, I am taken aback.. they always look like they were just found in a empty lot after a hurricane... Boats seem to be a "drive it until it dies" for some people...

Oh, Heaven forbid that you would lower yourself, Bond-o!

Naw,... I just wouldn't know where to start, Boomer....

Well,... except I know enough not to unscrew the stupid screw, port-side, on a Cobra,....

I've never turned a wrench on 1, other than yankin' ole stringer drives outa nice hulls to refit with Merc's.... ;)

....you were right Boomyal.....

Just sayin', Sam. I do however love my Stringer Drive (1979 hydro-mechanical, mated to a 1975 electric shift intermediate housing). It has now survived 34 years and untold quantities of adult beverages, not to mention pulling as many as 5 single skiers down the lake at one time. (behind a 190 hp FORD 302)

.....Plus I do not have to deal with alignments, gimbals, u-joints, shift cable boots, exhaust boots, bearing boots, shift cables and a myriad of other Rube Goldberg contraptions and devices.

The stringer drive also lifts higher( I can actually sit on the transom and change the prop). Lifts faster ( can actually approach a ski rope at the bow, kill the throttle, hit the up-tilt and have the rope pass under the boat and outdrive without hitting the prop) It turns tighter ( I can put the boat in a rotation within the length of the boat and actually dig a deep hole in the water).

In all those years, with all that time on it, I have had one tear down (for grins) that resulted in new seals and a couple of new, albeit, expensive worn shafts. Also, whatever they say, the huge impeller lasts for years and has only been replaced twice in all it's existence and even at that, the removed impellers were perfectly serviceable.

So there! You have my novice opinion.

btw, did I fail to mention? The whole setup is still running with the original transom boot and the original ball gears!

I can't speak as a pro either ... but like Boom: I'm a fan of my Stringer. I probably won't look to own another one, and wouldn't recommend someone buy one (unless they know what they're getting themselves into), but I really do like mine and will run it as long as I can keep it going.

I LOVE the instant power delivery from the electric shift. I know I'm going to miss it someday.

Re: Please rate OMC outdrives

My uncle had a tri-hull with a 3.8 OMC stringer in it, he had a love-hate relationship with that thing, he mainly hated it though. I don't think he did as much of his own work as I do, but when I told him I got a boat he said, "you really don't know what you're getting yourself into."

Once I told him I got a mercruiser he sort of laughed and said "I guess that's not really the same thing I had, maybe you won't have as many problems."

Re: Please rate OMC outdrives

If it is just design that you are asking about, sam, then I think it is your drive, Cone clutch Cobra. I think why people react poorly is basically what would you do with that info? Go buy another one? I am an old Stringer user, and I liked some of their features, but I would NEVER recommend one. Just too easy to get a decent Merc or Vovlo. That's why these threads always go stupid.

Re: Please rate OMC outdrives

Everything that has ever gone wrong with my drive has been completely my fault as a novice boater. Ran the drive into a rock and cracked the upper gear case, requiring replacement gear case to the tune of $700. Didnt properly drain the engine and manifolds for winter requiring replacement of both $1800.00. I wouldnt have even bothered fixing her back up if my drive wasnt currently in perfect condition and I didnt have a complete spare drive and power steering system in the barn that I got for $250. I love working on my stringer and there are only a handfull of parts that are really hard to find. I've completely torn everything apart with the exception of the lower gearcase and thats only because I dont have the tools for it. Its pretty easy to work on overall. I plan to keep her until she sinks.
