Please check out these pics of my new prop. I took it to the local prop shop to have a hub installed that fits my boat. Today I tried to put it on and it wouldn't fit. The splines were correct, but the prop wouldn't sit far enough back on the shaft into the lower unit's mounting. Also, the "lock" washer (the thick one with the splines in it), when slid onto the shaft, couldn't reach the splines to grab because the prop wouldn't slide far enough back onto the shaft. Was the hub put in backwards?

Is the prop reaching the end of the splines as it slides in, or it it stopping short?

Sounds to me like you might have a twisted prop shaft and the prop won't slide on far enough as it gets jammed up in the splines. Regardless, once it does you will need the properly sized thrust washer in front of it to transfer thrust forces directly from the tapered shaft to the hub and position the prop axially on the shaft.

In addition to Steelespike's request, it might help to take a picture of the prop from the side installed on the prop shaft as far as it will go to show the gap behind it, and from the side to show the prop nut end.

Outboard--2005 Yamaha 115 four stroke
Prop--PowerTech 4 blade cupped 13x15 (I believe the PFS4)

As to the bent prop shaft response, my current prop slides on and off easily, runs well, no vibrations, etc. If the prop shaft was bent, would this be the case?

That prop is obviously hubbed for Evinrude / Johnson. When you say you had it rehubbed to fit your boat, what do mean? Props are hubbed for motor brands, not boats.

The rubber internal hub is installed correctly.

HOWEVER: From what engine did the prop come? Just because a prop looks the same does not necessarily mean it will automatically fit. For example: Sometimes the metal prop hub (part the rubber is pressed into) is a bit longer or shorter to suit the application. Sometimes the internal prop webs, the metal that connects the inner hub to the outer hub, are too long and interfere with an anode around the prop shaft (if used).

In short, unless the prop has the same model number from the manufacturer as the correct prop for your engine, then there is no guarantee that it will fit without modifications.

Also: do not forget that aftermarket props (for example: Vortex listed as correct for Force) even though listed as correct, may not fit. In the case of the Vortex/Force, the anode MUST be removed--and no one tells you that.

Hadley, sorry to confuse you. When I said "my boat", I should have spoken more clearly and said "the engine on my boat".

The previous owner tells me the prop came off a 115 Yamaha; he then had it hubbed for his Johnson. That doesn't necessarily make it true that it was from a Yamaha, but he told me that info even before I revealed that I too have a Yamaha.

Thanks for the insights, I'm going back to the prop shop tomorrow to see what they say.
