Does anyone know a surveyor in PA? I'm going to take a look at a boat I just might take home.

Since people around here refer to "surveyors" for a guy who looks over a used 16' boat, as well as a company who would crawl a 85' yacht, you might want to describe what you are going to look at.

You may also want to specify where in PA you are looking since you may not want to pay a surveyor his hourly rate to drive across the state. Also, if you are looking for a local marine mechanic to look over a small boat with you, you want a local recommendation.

where ever the boat is,, google up a marine shop closest to it.... see if sellor objects to taking it there for the "once over".... if the seller is not selling a P.O.S. they probably wont object, if they do,,, clue #1 to run the other way.. tell the seller you are paying for the inspection... it's a win, win.. if seller objects,, run, run

Near Middletown PA. I called a marina there and the woman who answered shouldn't be in customer service. I asked for a motor check over and she said I'd have to leave it there and, "it ain't happinin this week." Wow thanks.

So the boat is a 70's starcraft bowrider, aluminum, read this as cheap..

Also whats with people only working on certain brands of motors?

I'm surprised they would even tell you its only a week out... You talked to a marina in the spring, unless you are a well established customer, or a new customer with $$$$$ to spend, expect to wait... Keep in mind you probably were the 100th person to call her today.

So your engine manufacturer may no longer be in existence. Even if it is, parts for a 70's engine are probably going to be tough to find, at least if it is anything beyond a starter, stator, or CDI. The only parts that are available are ebay specials, usually used. Generally the higher end (certified/dealer, etc...) mechanics won't touch something like that, they can't guarantee their work because they can't trust the possibly sketchy parts.

Yeah, i will side with the lady. This is every boat shops busiest season, and everyone wants their boat summer-ized and ready to go yesterday. Even if they said they could get to it i would expect to add a week or more onto the date they said they would finish it.
