Irregardless of the engine make....if your cooling passages are plugged with crap, what can you do about it?
My '96 Yamaha C85 has a problem with overheating, and when I changed the head gasket earlier this year, I noticed that the cooling passages on this engine are ridiculously narrow. The coolant has about 4 or 5 millimeters to flow outside of the cylinder barrels. Most automobiles have about twice that distance, though the late corvette ZO6 has the barrels almost touching.; I suspect those engines will crack their barrels.
My own Porsche 928 has 122 mm between the 97 mm cylinder barrels. This is bizarre; this 286 cubic inch engine has the exact same bore spacing as Chrysler's 426 and 440 cubic inch engine. YES, via thousands of dollars....32 valve engines with original Chrysler blocks have been assembled WITH Porsche heads. It takes a custom crank with the boss for the belt-driven overhead cam. These have all been done by Arias, a company from California.
The first Porsche V8, designed in 1973, was designed to not only negate sound restrictions in Switzerland, it was designed to deal with emissions laws, which negated flat-six engines of high power. A good V8 can run cleaner than a flat-six........
And kick the living **** out of it in the process!
And match it's fuel efficiency, if you have the right prop.
So how do you deal with plugged cooling passages? Can you use a nylon brush in a drill to try to scrape the crap out of your passages? How far down do you go,and what about a wire brush?
N!
