Re: plugs for 82 15 hp jonnyrude

From this link I copy/paste this:

The spark plug wires usually have a plastic tape on them with the recommended spark plug number. If the recommended number is Champion L78V. This is the non-electrode plug that fires in 360 degrees to the sides of the plug. These stock plugs have an air gap in the insulator that is suppose to increase spark, but as the ignition system gets older & somewhat weaker, the system just can't put out the voltage needed. If you go out and run Wide Open Throttle all day, and just slow down when its required by law or you come in to the dock, then you should use these air gap plugs. They have no idle bar, & if you run slow using them, they will foul easily.

Then the other corresponding conventional single electrode Champion plug number is L77J4, or L77JC4, or it's newer replacement #821. If you are using the motor to run to the fishing area and stop to fish or troll slowly for extended periods of time, these plugs are probably the better choice as they tend to not foul as bad as the air gap plugs do.

The spark plug gap for the OMC 9.9 /15 is the same on all 74 thru 2000 recommended being set at .030. Depending on what book you look at, the recommended plugs & gap settings may vary. One book recommends Champion plugs for 74-76 , being #L81C, while the 77-98 are QL82C.

The NGK brand also makes good spark plugs, #B7HS (or BR7HS resistor), or the hotter B6HS-10, gapped at .035 will also work, however the consensus from users is that the Champions seem to work better on these motors. Look at this website for NGK useful info http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/techinfo/spark_plugs/faq/faqread.asp
