Inherited a 1974 Evinrude 9.9 model 10454G. Has been sitting for about 12 years. I am cleaning it up before I try to start it. The plugs that were in it were Champion QL77JC4. The service manual recommends Champion UL4J. The plate on the motor says to use Champion L7J. Any suggestions as to what worked best in your 9.9 engines? NGK?

The QL's are for '77 and newer that have cd ignition, and will likely foul quickly. Champion UL81C's are indicated for '74-'76.. B7HS ngk's work best for me on low tension(point) ignition 9.9/15's.

Good luck!

Use the NGK B7HS plugs. Those QL77JC4 will foul within an hour or so on that model.

@ kbait and OptsyEagle....thank you for the info. I purchased the NGK B7HS today. I take it that the gap should be .030 inch as per the service manual. Also the "air silencer" is missing on the motor. Is it necessary?

.030" is correct. Silencer isn't needed, but the plate that holds the plastic choke handle should be mounted in place for proper choke operation.

The plate that I believe you are referring to is called a "choke detent" (in a service manual) which is missing. It seems to just keep the choke knob and shaft from rocking up and down as the choke is pushed in and out. I was thinking of just getting a small flat piece of aluminum and screwing it into one of the holes that the air silencer used and having the piece extend over the choke shaft to keep it from rocking up and down. Does that sound OK or am I missing something? Also, I have another question about the engine and probably a few more as I clean and free up the siezed bolts, etc. as I go along before trying to start the engine up! The service manual recommends GM Dexron gearcase lube for the gearcase.....what do you recommend now? Is there a synthetic available? Thank you for your expertise........

Synthetic is fine. I use 80/90 high/vis outboard gear oil. Any outboard gearcase oil.

Once you get it running, call Tim's Outboard 218-682-2331 w/your model number and get the plastic intake, choke lever detent, screws, knobs or whatever else you need. Top secret files in this forum has a salvage yard list too.

Good luck!
