I do quite a lot of trolling with the main motor (1999 Johnson 40 hp, oil injected, 2 stroke). Sometimes troll with a trolling plate down, sometimes not. When I do a lot of trolling without running the motor flat out for a while afterwards, I lose engine performance. Plugs fouling and such. Its not a problem on large lakes where there is plenty of room to open it up after a day of trolling plus there is additional wide open time getting to a spot and such. On smaller lakes there is not enough room to open it up and run for a while and I really don't want to mess with others that are fishing by running back and forth up the lake. Is there something that I could add to the gas to help clean out the motor when I do a lot of trolling? I have 2 tanks on board so it would not be a problem to just put stuff in the trolling tank.

Along these same lines, I cannot seem to get the motor to run in low idle for any length of time. Engine dies on me. Is there something I can do to allow it to run in low idle well? If I could, it would mean that I could run without the trolling plate for most trolling applications. Or am I better off running with the plate anyway as it will run at higher rpms?

I have also looked into getting a 4 stroke, either kicker or main engine, just not feasible right now. Appreciate any help that you can offer.

Andrew
