I just had my 88 Johnson 70hp serviced a week ago and after they asured me all was well I when out into the Ocean. Well I ended getting towed back because after 5 minutes of WOT it just died out. I got home pulled the plugs and they were black with oil, can this happen on their first use. They should have been new since they were just serviced. I had a small oil leak before the VRO I figured that fixing that hose would solve the problem. Today I started my engine in the driveway with water hose attached and started well ran for about 5 minute I shut it off then when to start it back up a minute later and no luck. I pulled the plugs again and they are black again with some oil on them.

What could be the problem ? I spent a few hundred dollars on servicing this engine and want to get a decent days use out of it..... PLEASE HELP

Re: Plugs wet with Oil

Fuel side of my VRO started failing last summer. Oil side still pumped it in though. Could be the OMS / VRO pump starting to give issues.

Re: Plugs wet with Oil

I replaced the VRO pump 3 years and maybe used it 4 times since the replacement. I removed the hose that goes to the carbs and cranked the engine, the fuel and oil mix shoot right out. I will be replacing the plugs on Friday and will see if I can get the molded VRO hoses from the service shop to replace them as well. Maybe an air leak in one of those hoses....
