This is probably a dumb question. I am going to be installing a new sink in the bathroom. I went to pick up the new supply lines tonight. I forgot to look and see what I have in there now. I quickly became confused and headed home empty handed. My question is what does OD inlet and FIP outlet mean. I think I need 3/8 to connect to the shut off and 1/2 to the faucet. But what does OD and FIP mean? Just curious.

Re: plumbing question

OD = outside diameter
FIP = Female international pipe thread
MIP = Male international pipe thread

At least that is what I have been going by for the past 30 years :D

Re: plumbing question

The "IP" part stands for "iron pipe", means NPT, National Pipe Thread, a class of tapered thread.
M and F designate an internal or external thread.

Re: plumbing question

When I'm at the box stores (orange or blue) picking up supplies and forget the size of something, I usually buy what will cover me and return the rest later. I know I will be back and I hate a wasted trip with a project on tap. They're pretty good about accepting returns.

Re: plumbing question

There is more to this though, compression fitting vs standard pipe thread. Most residential faucet supply valves are 3/8 compression and faucets are 1/2 pipe.

Compression threads are finer than pipe threads.
