Hi guys - gutted my sons shower down to firing strips & block wall, other two walls metal studs - the grout had failed, wall board total mush. Removed the tile on the floor & cement threshold.

I was going to go back w/ cement boord & 24 X 24 tiles w/ a TTL redo. Is there a recomended sealer / film I should be installing under the tiles right down from the walls to the floor pan?

If its a weave re-inforced mortar board ,just thinset the tiles directly to it.Just make sure and use fiberglass float tape and a latex or polymer blend of thinset on the seams. Also helps if the wall studs are very even before attaching the mortarboard to them.Otherwise you'l have uneven seams that can be a problem when tiling. Personally I would use the wire mesh and trowl on mortar.A bit more steps but less suseptible to expansion and contraction fractures of the finished tile job down the road.

The building code here requires a sealed membrane completely under all tiles. This is painted on the surface under all the wetted areas. Your building material supplier will probably have tech sheets with instructions for use. Depending on grout joints for sealing is asking for trouble in my opinion.

Put a couple coats of silicone grout sealer on after you tile. It's not a cure all but it helps. btw I agree with OB on the mesh and mortar even though it is a bigger job.
