Plywood and Carpet questions

I am helping a friend replace the plywood and carpet in a 16ft. Sea Nymph that he bought last year. The boat came with a new roll of carpet. The questions that I have are:

What kind of plywood do we need to use? Can we use something from Lowes or Home Depot, or do I need to obtain marine grade plywood?
Does the carpet need to be stapled and glued, or just stapled? If so, what kind of adhesive do I need to use?

Any other advice that can be contributed would be appreciated.

Re: Plywood and Carpet questions

Exterior grade plywood NOT pressure treated
Sealed w/:
Epoxy
Spar Varnish
Porch paint

& other sealers (those ^^^ are in order of expense, and longevity. Spend more now, & it'll last longer)

You'll want to glue the carpet down, and depending on where you're putting it & the contour of that surface, a few staples may help keep it in place until the glue dries. Particularly @ hatches & other cutouts.

If there is any info on the carpet, you might check it's maker's recommended glue...... Different carpet makers use different backing material. That can affect the glue you should use. But generally, any SOLVENT based exterior carpet glue could be used. Stay away from waterbased (it's a boat ;))

Look around lots of good info in the resto forums:
Best adhesive for marine carpet?

That ^^^ may prove an interesting read......

Re: Plywood and Carpet questions

my towns lowes and home depots do not have the marine grade plywood...some of the little hardware stores did....it was between 58-77 dollars for an 8' sheet at the stores i checked...I went to two lowes and two home dopots they had the eterior plywood and silents if that is what you use...call around the little stores if you go with the marine plywood because there was a $20 dollar mark up of the exact same piece of wood. Habitat for humanity resale store is where it's at...upcycle.

Make sure to check that the roll of carpet that came with it is "open loop",............You don't want to deal with the mess of snagged fish hooks that come with "closed loop",...................

Re: Plywood and Carpet questions

Welcome aboard.

There are a handfull of Sea Nymphs going through restoration right now so suggest reviewing what others are doing.

Hang in there a bit and many others will be offering suggestions for your consideration.

I will say though that since you are pulling deck, there will be a good chance your foam is waterlogged and need removing. You can take core samples to prove this one way or the other.

Additionally, there is a fair chance you will have a crack to two in your hull. If you have to remove foam and clean hull they can be seen.

Good luck, do some searching to get a feel for it and of course....pics pics pics.
