I have a 18ft Starcraft SS, and need to start on restoration, I know I have read some place on here on what type of plywood I can use, can someone refresh my memory ??
I plan on using epoxy on the boards to seal them...
I just researched this for my Skeeter redo. Marine grade plywood has few to no voids in the plies. Exterior grade is made with the same exterior glue as marine grade, but may have a few voids in the plies. I oped for the A/C grade. The A side is the pretty side and the C side may have a few knots. It is going to be covered, so I didn't mind. Plus, the A/C is much cheaper. I too, was going to use epoxy, but went with poly as was suggested to me by oops! and others. oops! did a pretty good write up in a thread I started. He highlighted some points of his famous "Hull extension thread" here. And, there is some good input from some other respected forum contributors. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=421695
A good compromise is MDO (medium density overlay) which is usually used by the highway department for road signs. It is typically glued up with douglas fir cores and has a thin sheet of lauan on both sides then a phenolic resin impregnated paper which glues easily. The MDO is impossible to separate from the plywood and is the reason why highway signs last.
It's slightly more costly that exterior grade plywood but a less than marine grade. In the sheets that I bought all my cuts have not yielded any voids so it seems to be pretty good stuff.
