I think I need a pnumatic nailer but there are so many different kinds that I'm confused as to what I need. It will be used around the house and 2 uses that I can think of right now is working on my deck and replacing the siding (wood) on my shed. Anyone know what type/size I need?

The first criteria is decide what kinds of nails you will be driving.

Darn DJ, why you gotta complicate even more? LOL I don't forsee any need in using finishing nails so I guess the ones with heads. Are there other types with these nailers?

Yep! I've got a brad/pin nailer (small or no heads) and a regular nailer that uses the nails, with heads, that you buy in "clips" for lack of a better term. Some use "coils" of nails. Those are usually roofing nailers.

Both my nailers are Porter Cable. They don't get used hard and both have served well.

Again, determine a range of nail sizes (diameter) you'll be using and then go to a big box store and see what they've got.

I recently had a chance to use a Bostich nailer that was pnuematic but had it's own compressor, on board and battery powered. Pretty cool. No air hose/electrical cord to deal with. It was a bit heavy though.

I use a bostich for staples and small (up to 1.5") Brads, I have a Paslode 900420 cordless, it has a small internal combustion engine, it use's gas cannisters and a rechargable battery. It's good for headed nails from 1.250" - 2.5 framing nails. for the size it is not that heavy, and you aren't dragging a hose and compressor, or looking for long power cords!:D

After all the 2x4s were cut, I framed a 10'wx20'lx9'h workshop in an hour with it.Had a buddy help hold the 5/8" & 3/4" osb panels up, changed to 1.5 nails and we sheeted the whole building, including the roof in another hour!

I have a Bostich framing nailer, makes short work on decks. For trim, a Senco finish nailer along with a couple of smaller brad and pin nailers for the small projects.

Timely post. We just got home today from the local Harbor Freight (like Northern Tools) with a pancake compressor they put on sale for $89. Plus we downloaded a $15 coupon.
I am sure it is Chinese made, but had a 2hp and pumped continuous 115 psi. Double tank as well.
We bought it to use with a coil nailer. Shoots 2-2 1/2 nails. Both are off brands, but don't really use this stuff all that much and figured we could save a few dollars. Anyway, they had a good supply of nailers, nails and compressors for all this kinda stuff.

Why stop at one.. I have a Milwaukee 16ga finish nailer which is very versatile. The porter cable in the 16 ga is also very good. I have a brad nailer but never use it.

I traded the 15ga angled nailer in for the 16ga as I liked the nails better. The 15ga has the round head nails and the 16ga ar flatter and leave less of a hole.

I think you will find that it all depends on the job. You cannot frame with a finish nailer and you cannot do trim with a framin nailer.

Unless you just have it to blow the HF will work fine for your application. You can buy both an angled big nail and a small finish nailer for under $100. I've put over 5000 nails through my big gun and at least 10000 through the finish nailer. They are not perfect as nothing from HF is but they worked damn good for the price.

Re: Pnumatic nailer??

Any good brand of siding coil nailer would do decking, framing, and siding as they have a depth adjustment. I personally have years of my life using nail guns and I say Hitachi all the way cept' for brads and finish use nothing but Senco and for roofing use Bostitch. Stay away from the cartridge fed guns unless you wanna rip your hair out or your simply an electrician who drives 20 to 40 nails per year. This is a life long investment for you so don't cheap out and settle for 1/2 the product. Hitachi's last for years through foul weather and constant use and abuse. :) General contractor/carpenter since 2/93

A little note on framing nailers. Check your local codes. Framing nailer come in (for a lack of absolute technical description) full head and half head versions. Some codes will only accept full headed nails.
