I have been having some missing at low rpms. Cant get it to idle below 1k. I took the fly wheel off and decide to look at the point. Since a shop did them. I saw that one adjustment screw didnt have the busing pressed into to it. Could this cause the idle, well not to idle correctly?
Oh yea, where can I get another one of these?

Re: point adjustment screw

I don't understand what you're saying about a "bushing" missing from the points?

(Point Setting Of Battery Capacitance Discharge)
( Ignition Models - 1968 thru 1972)
(Some have points - Some do not)
(Joe Reeves)

The points must be set to .010 but no wider than .010..... BUT in some instances due to a possible slight inaccurately machined crankshaft lobe or a slight offset of one set of points, a setting slightly less than .010 would be required as follows.

Whether the crankshaft has two or three lobes, when setting the points, check the setting of the points on each individual lobe by rotating the crankshaft by hand.

You may find that setting one set of points to .010 on one lobe, then turning the crankshaft to the next lobe, the gap measures .011 or .012 (too wide). This is where you would need to close that gap down to the required .010. A gap too wide can result in a ignition miss when throttle is applied.

Bottom line, pertaining to the point setting at the various lobe locations____ .010, .010, .009, is okay____ .010, .010, .011 is not!

Re: point adjustment screw

On the adjustment screw, at the end you have a point (bushing) where you measure the gap. (I think this is what its called) Anyways it was just flopping around. It was not pressed into the adjustment screw. See pix above. The points were replaced by a shop several months ago, ever since it has not been idling correctly.

Where can i get another adjustment screw with the point pressed into it? A new point set has this?

I have a two point setup.

Is it okay if the points are close together, more than .005?

Re: point adjustment screw

The Points part number is 383655, about $65.00 each right now.

I explained how to set those points. That method works fine.

Closer than .005? No! One set must be set to .010, and if the other one needs to be set to .005 or less in order to have the first one set to that .010.... something is seriously wrong.

Thanks for the feedback. The method you expained will do just fine. I used it to check the gap before inspecting the points.

I found the point set here on iboats. The price is around $15.00. http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfinder/?*******=810395404&gd_grid_id=599&gd_poid=111605&gd_row=34&**********=100251969 Where did you get $65.00 from?

Also, do they come with the adjustment scew?

$65.00 price was in Bombardiers 2010 parts price book. $15.00 is a great price.

Re: point adjustment screw

Speaking of somebody down the road, they will be misled if they take this thread as it is written. 85ESL72 has Battery CD igniton and it takes points set number 383655, which indeed does list for $65. The 580290, $14.99, pioints listed in the iboats link is totally different and will not fit at all. In fact, iboats does not have the 383655 points.

Joe's answers were right on.

I wonder how this motor actually got fixed???

This is true. Because I bought a set of these points thinking this. Totally different part. Thanks for bringing this up, as I forgot about it...

Yep..... The 580290 point set is for the older V4 models ranging from 1958 to somewhere around 1967 or so.
