Between the "hold down" screw and the "eccentric" screw I can not seem to get the (.020") gap set. It seems I get the gap I need and tighten the "hold down" screw then the "eccentric" screw and then I loose the gap.:mad-new:

I have read the "seloc" section but its not happening...........any suggestions out there?

Thanks,

You dont loosen the hold down screw when adjusting the points. Keep it tight, then adjust with the eccentric.

If the hold down screw has a star washer or some other kind of lock washer, therein lies the problem. The only type washer alowed on that screw would be a small wave washer.

At any rate... tighten the retaining screw first, then adjust the points. Yes, you'll be able to adjust the points with that screw tightened.

(Point Setting Of Magneto Models)
(J. Reeves)

Set the points as follows. Have the flywheel key aligned with the fiber rubbing portion of the ignition points. Adjust the gap so that a .020 gauge will pass thru but a .022 will not. Should there be any question of the points being dirty (touching the contact with your finger would cause them to be dirty), clean them with a small brush and acetone or lacquer thinner.

NOTE 1: Should the operating cam have a small portion on it with the word "SET" imprinted, align this portion with the fiber rubbing portion instead of the flywheel key.

NOTE 2: Should the cam have the word TOP imbossed on the top of it, that is a cam that could be installed upside down and this is simply telling you which side is up. It is not a position where one would set the points.

Once I have the (hold down) screw tight as it should have been, I make my adjustment while on the high side of the cam with the (adjustment) screw. This (adjustment) screw does not seem to tighten down by design, it just keeps widening the gap, I'm lost folks!
It seems that once I get my gap with the adjustment screw and it really does not tighten by design then it seems it would vibrate out of position.

Thanks for your patience,

the adjustment screw is only a "cam". when its set ...assuming the hold down screw is tight....the points are set. with that being said, 020 with a feeler guage is just a rough set for the points. a timing fixture is the best bet, or setting with a multi meter without a fixture is the second choice. jmo
