points adjustment

I have a 1975 25 hp evinrude and I am currently trying to tune this motor up I need to know what the point setting is and at what point on the cam lobe to make this adjustment a mechanic told me that the setting was twenty thousands but i dont know if this is done at the "set" mark on the cam lobe or at tdc and if it is the tdc mark what is the gap at te set point help

Howdy Cats.<br /><br />Set the points at .020 at their widest opening (cam follower on peak of cam).<br /><br />Steelspipke's tag line says that one who works on an outboard without a manual has a fool for a mechanic. That is very good advice.<br /><br />Good luck. :)

thanks jb got a clymer manual and a old omc book but neither give any info on points gap they just refer to buying expensive specialised tools. you know manufacturers

The .020 setting is set at the points widest gap, that will get you close to where the points need to be when they start to open. The timing fixture and proceedure that the manufacturer reccommends, sets the points to open at a certain location. The manufacturers preceedure is better, especially if you have a motor that as somewhat old.
