Re: points on 9.5 johnson
The flywheel will turn, I mean it won't start!! I have even tried putting fuel strait to the carb! The coils are mounted right (flywheel turns), but do not see ANYTHING that says top on it at all. No wires rub anywhere, and guess i don't understand what you mean by "rotating cam until point block is at highest point on the cam". What i did was rotate cam until point gap opened up and set to .020 then rotated again until other point opened and adjusted, put flyweel back on and tried to start it! Do you literally mean "highest" by the points moving up on the cam? sorry for lack of knowledge i am waitin on ken cook co. to find a manual for me.
If you don't see any marking on the cam, try sliding it off the crankshaft and turning it over. If you now see the word "top" or possibly another mark, the cam was installed upside down. That will affect the timing of the spark.
Have you determined that you are actually getting spark on both cylinders? If you don't have a tester, you CAN test for spark by removing the plugs, connecting them to the plug wires, then while touching the bottom electrode of each in turn to a stationary metal part, pull the starter cord as you observe the gap. You may have to be inside to see it, but you should see a blue spark jump the gap on each plug.
Oh! And when you put everything back together, make sure the top wire is on the top plug, and the bottom wire is on the bottom plug. You'd be surprised how often the simplest mistakes show themselves, even among the experienced.
