Without removing the flywheel, is there a simple way to tell if an outboard has points or electronic ignition?

Re: points or electronic ignition?

Depends on what motor you are talking about. Some motors have electronic ignition AND points!

However, look for a power pack--a sure sign of electronic ignition. But again, there are exceptons to that rule too. A few electronic ignitions don't even have a power pack. Eska comes to mind.

If in doubt, just ask. Give us a year/model, or better yet, a model number.

Re: points or electronic ignition?

Thanks FR, Hey, I got the flywheel off using the bolt and 2 nuts as someone suggested, it was real easy. I purchased a Lisle spark tester, the type with a bulb enclosed in a clear plastic bulb, and dont see much of a spark from either cylinder. I cleaned and set the points, put new, properly gapped plugs in, sanded the magnets on the flywheel and checked that the magnets were strong, and sanded the outside of the coils. Also pulled the condensers and one was badly corroded. Sanded that and put it all back together. Still very little spark. The coils look good, which I know can be decieving. I checked the cylinder pressure and they both read 100 lbs. I pulled the carb and shot it with carb cleaner. pulled the one removable jet and the float valve needle and shot in there too. Can't get the motor to even cough. I think I have an ignition issue. Where would be the most logical place to start? New points and condensers? New coils? Not even sure where to get these as I'm still not sure if this is a chrysler or force engine. Any guidance from someone who's been in this situation a few times would be great. Thanks in advance!!

No one is going to be able to help unless you provide more info! Give us a model & serial #, otherwise we're shooting in the dark and can only provide general info and guesses!:(
