Ok I have been soaking up the info here and have read everything I can, but I am not a mechanic and know just enough to be dangerous, so have a few quick questions.

I have a 72 Johnson 9.5 seahorse that is in excellent condition, but had no spark. I have cleaned it up, totally rebuilt the carb, and am trying to tackle the spark issue. Since it is in great shape I decided just to pull the flywheel and replace everything since if I get it running good plan to hang on to it for a long time.

I am getting ready to replace the points and coils, but not the plug wires (they look like new) and if I get the spark fixed what else should I worry about before trying to get her started. I know what the points need adjusted to, but dont have a clue about timing even though I have the service manual, and have a feeler guage to set plugs and the points, but not sure if I can just replace everything and expect her to run, or if I need to just have someone address the timing and point setting before i put her all together?

thanks,

Welcome to iboats!!

You're on the right track...pull the flywheel and have a look around. There are lots a folks here who have the right answers of how things are to go back together. You didn't mention the water pump , but that's all good, you'll have to get her going, first!.

Let us hear for you, soon!

Recheck those points. Even new ones sometimes need a touch of cleaning. And of course they have to be gapped correctly.

Timing is not adjustable (except points timing/gap)

Did you adjust the coils to be even with the machined edges on the armature plate? Are you sure none of the wires are dragging on moving parts?
