Re: Points

We would have suggestions if it was clear what the problem is. "Point won't seperate" doesn't convey a picture of what is happening. There just isn't enough information.

Do you have a Service Manual? If not, get one. www.outboardbooks.com

Good luck. :)

Re: Points

Can you take a small screwdriver and seperate them, or are they welded togeather?
Maybe the rubbing block on the end of the points is missing, not allowing the points to contact the crank lobe.

Re: Points

Are you turning the shaft so the high side of the cam is under the second set of points? They won't separate unless the cam is pushing them open.

sorry first time doing this......when the point comes to the high side it should seperate right?.....well when the one hits the high side it will seperate and when i turn the fly wheel and the other hits no matter which way i turn the adjusting screw the point will not seperate....but i can seperate the point with a small screw driver so i know it isn't welded together....i did find a service manual thanks

And you are loosening the other screw correct?

Look close at the points to make sure they both look the same. Could be the block fell off.

FR is pointing out a common problem for people adjusting points for the first time. Only one set of points is open at a time. When you manually turn the shaft, the high side of the cam opens one set of points and the 2nd set of points is closed. So, gap the open set of points to .020 and manually turn the shaft and when the second set opens then gap those to 0.20. Then your done. Unfortunately manuals don't give the bit of information that FR is pointing out.

good luck;)

Re: Points

It's possible the point set shaft is bent. I've seen that happen when someone who didn't know what they were doing tried to force the points to adjust. Compare the two point sets and see if that's the case. If bent, I'd get new points and replace both sets.
