Have a 15 ft 1959 starcraft runabout and am about to strip it for repainting. The idea crossed my mind to leave part of the hull unpainted and polish it (kind of like some small airplanes were in the 1950's). Is this more trouble than its worth?

Unless you have many many many hours of free time and patience........ yes it can be done.........

We have had a few people here polish their starcrafts. Once polished it needs to be coated with sharkhyde to try to maintain the look. Good luck.

IMO too much trouble.

I thought about polishing part of my starcraft as well. I decided not to as it takes many hours of work and alot of upkeep. Polishing is very dirty. It leaves a black residue and get's all over. It does look really cool though. Google Feathercraft boats and look through the images, alot of those guys go polished and looks really nice.

Here are my pics of my1961 starcraft 14'.( years ago I had the same choice. I striped it and cleaned it up. Once the paint was gone I polished it with SOS cleaning pads!!!
8 years later this is how it looks Bob_Vt! I go around it in 15 minutes with one SOS pad twice a season. I run in fresh water most of the time, but go into LIS many times during the summer. NO OTHER Maintenance

Naked is the preferred look of my boat - If you are going to strip - do not use mechanical scraping or sanding - just strip and wipe/hose off.

I have tried various polishing techniques - but the current look is good for me!!

Thanks for all opinions. Those are some nice looking boats! I guess I will see what kind of condition the metal is under the paint before I get my heart set on anything.
