polypropylene fuel tank question?

My boat has a 55 gallon poly fuel tank. A couple of years ago I had to replace the fuel sending unit. Apparently I didn't tighten the screws all the way and eventually I started getting problems with water in my tank. The other day I replaced the unit and the screw holes are not in the greatest of shape. There is no working room under the deck to re-drill or tap new threads so I am limited to working with what I have. Anyway I have the screws as tight as I can get them and I tested it by pouring a few ounces of water around the unit. Over a period of a couple of hours the water is gone....guess where it is going? I was wondering if I pull it apart and use a gasket sealer on the gasket would the sealer work. What worries me is I know a lot of products are not compatible with polypropylene. Can anybody suggest a product that would be good for this application?

Permatex makes a product that is not soluble in gasoline or water. Autozone carries it.

Smear it on both sides of the gasket and tighten the screws as best as you can. You are using a gasket, right?

This stuff is fuel resistant. I've used it with good results. Possibly self-tapping screws 1 size larger might grab the poly better than your current screws.

Permetex black silicone adhesive sealant would work great. smear it in the bolt holes and on the threads of the screw. They will tighten up and dry tight

I have not had good luck with silicone. The Permatex that GA showed is what I used. Thanks GA!
