I have a 1975 OMC 175 (302 Ford) and my OMC owners manual shows a point gap range of .014-.019. All the other motors shown have a single gap # (eg, .018) What gap setting should I use? I'm thinking just split the difference and go with .0165 (ish)? The dwell should be 31* but I don't have a dwell meter and it will be a few days until I can get one, so what setting should I use for now? I usually run 87 octane with the dreaded 10% E-word.

Re: Pondering point gap

I always set at 18-19. I have gotten so good I don't even dwell anymore. Every time I checked it it was right.

Closer gap (the .016 end) will get you better performance at high RPMs like 6000 plus, while the wider end (.019) will last longer. Just remember to put some grease on the dist cam to lube the rubbing block.

Also your dist cam should twist about 10 degrees and spring back, check this by turning the rotor by hand. If it does not turn or is stiff and clunky you will need to pull the breaker plate and clean/lube the advance weights and cams.

Even better...check that the timing advances correctly using a timing light over RPM.

Also remember that after setting dwell, you need to readjust your timing.

Re: Pondering point gap

The point gap is a reference only, the dwell is far more important. get a dwell meter.
