I live on a lake that banned gas motors. (YUCK).
I want to gear up a small pontoon (18' or 20') with a electric motor. I see that minn kota makes a pretty fancy 2hp (48 volt)model but WOW it sells for about $2500. Is there anything out there that could pull a pontoon around at 2-3 miles per hour for about 2-3 hours so we can enjoy a 120 acre lake while partaking in a cool beverage?? I was hoping to find something for about $1000 (or less) complete with on board charging and some type of remote control operation.
Thanks for any ideas you can give me!! kraky

This looks interesting.
Click on the link to Sunray electric outboard Motor.

http://www.fiestaboats.com/electric.htm

Is this a private lake with a home owners association? Where's it at?

120 acres isn't very big. seems you could string a rope across it and pull yourself back and forth. :)

Roscoe--you're from Medford!!!-- So am I...--its Sacketts lake. (Not sure about the 120 acres--probably a little bigger). It's a small world. Don Kraky

Re: Pontoon needs electric motor!!

my idea for getting around the electric laws was to get two or three (!) eBay trolling motors in the 36 to 50 pound thrust class and put a small gas generator on board the boat, with a decent batt charger to keep the batteries up ... they go for cheap on eBay if you hunt long enough, and the gas gen is four cycle and absolutely NOT a hazard to the lake

an earlier incarnation of this was two 36 pound motors on a 14 footer ... easily outpaced two pumped up fanatics in a canoe, towed same fanatics for the rest of the day, lol

Try find someone in your area that services electric trolling motor. Oftne they are able to get factory reconditions for a reasonable price. My local repairman often gets motors in and people either don't want to repair it when they find out the cost or don't come back for the repaired motor. He will ususally sell them for a few bucks over the cost of parts. He recently sold me a Minkota Autopilot with a new motor for $125.
