Thought I would do a quick right up on polishing my pontoons toons.
My boat is a 89 Bass Buggy that I complete restored last yr.

I first started with getting the boat off the trailer

Then I used some JJV?s pontoon cleaner. This stuff works awesome even on my old boat it took all the scale off and brought them to a nice dull finish. I went over each toon twice and I used a little less then a gallon. Well worth the 30 bucks.

After it dried I sanded the entire toon (everything I wanted to polish) with some 400 grit sand paper on a random orbital sander.

Next was onto the fun and dirty part. This will make your arm feel like jello and cover you head to toe with black dust. I wore Ear, Eye, and respirator for the first half and will be switching to a full face shield for the 2nd half.
I purchased all my polishing products from here. I had the 6? grinder that I use on metal so I didn?t need that.
Aluminum Compound Kits-Hand Held Buffer - $33.14 : Busch Enterprises, Headquarters for Premium Shine-Zone Products

Started with the Yellow pad and the Brown Bar, working from bottom to the top of the boat. Stopping every 16? to clean the pad and apply more compound. Very important to clean the pad every so often as it will get aluminum build up on it and actually scratch the toons.
Next was onto the Off white pad and white bar. This brought it upto where you see it now.
I did all this in about 2hrs (sanding and the 2 polishing)
Next step will be a final polish then a quick hand polish. All said and done I should have 10hrs into both toons front and back and the sides.

Nice. It's gonna be a shame to get those wet.

I am about to dive into the same thing. But using different products. I will write up a post when I get to it. Hopefully soon.

I purchased a bottle of Rebels Metal Polish, I used this to polish my semi years ago and it is by far the easiest product to use for aluminum I have found.

I'm jealous. My old outer tubes were so caked when I bought it that it took me 30 hrs. just to sand them clean. Acid wouldn't even touch the hardened calcium/algae/crud.

Looks good, are you going to sharkhide them? I'm currently polishing on mine too.

I'm up in the air about sharkhide or not. My boat doesn't sit in the water for days on end and from what I have read if you just give the toons a quick wipe down after use there is no need to sharkhide them.

Worst come to worst I will go back and polish them again(should go much quicker the 2nd time) and then apply shark hide.

Nice looking tubes! You might even gain 1 mph! I wish mine looked like those.

They will turn white again even of they never see water, it is just natural oxidation, if you want them to keep looking that way you have to put something on them or repolish once a year.

We have something at work that is an aluminum sealer and way cheaper than Shark Hide and it last longer but of coarse I can't remember the name of it .

There are few things better looking than polished aluminum though

I plan on polish them once a yr if not more. It should go quick now that the hard part is done.

Looks good ? What are you guys ?

Those look absolutely gorgeous !!! Wow. Bet it looks hot on the water too.

Excellent job. Who would of thought they'ld turn out that nice.

I would not be surprised if it slips through the water easier.

Haha Thanks

My only regret is not doing this sooner. It would have been 10times easier when the boat was just this and I could have put it on a rotisserie.

Re: Pontoon Polishing

To remove boat from trailer, tie off and slide boat off the back of the trailer so you have about 12" or so hanging off the back. Lower the trailer at the tongue to its lowest position, so that the back of the 'toons are at their highest point. Make a cradle for the rear portion of the 'toons and place it so it fits snug under the rear of the 'toons (My brother-in-law used foam blocks). Then raise the trailer tongue to its highest point, and the back of the boat should now be supported by the cradle. Now I used 2 4x4x10' post put together to make a 4x8x10 beam, that was placed over the front of the boat and tied into the tie offs on the front of the 'toons. "A" frames are made to support each side or the beam and a floor jack is placed under one side and raised until the boat was off trailer. Pull the trailer out and put additional cradles under the front 'toons for safety. It has been 5-6 years since my brother-in-law and did it on a family boat, but it was fairly easy, and has been done yearly when they take the boat out for the winter.
