DW and I are considering a trip to Port Clinton this summer. We'd probably be staying in Sandusky Bay off of Lake Erie, it appears to be fairly sheltered.

We'll be out sometime midsummer in our 2010 20' Suntracker pontoon with a 90HP OB.

I've never done anything bigger with the pontoon than the small inland lakes in SW Ohio. Is a smaller pontoon like mine safe in a large body of water like Lake Erie?

Re: Pontoons on the inland sea

I've had mine in Chincoteague VA twice, but never out of the bay and never more than about a five minute dash to land. I've been to Sandusky and been on the bay, but not recently enough to say if a 20 foot pontoon would be safe there. Erie is famous for getting really rough, really fast, so if I was going I would take the boat, and stay close to home base.

You might ask where you are planning to stay if anyone around there uses pontoons in the bay. Check the regs, you have to have additional safety equipment on the Chessy Bay and probably on Great Lakes too.

Good Luck, have fun and stay safe.
