Poor performance when accelerating

Hi,
I've got another thread going relating to my 1987 Rinker V210 3.7L sticking in either gear and not wanting to come out but this one is in regard to the engine not wanting to come up and run at WOT.

Once I put the boat in the water the other day, I let it idle for a few minutes in gear and then when I put the throttle down to come up on plane, the motor just seemed to slowly come up to speed but it never got going full tilt. A while back I disconnected my tach after I found out it was shorting out the engine electrical system so I had no way of knowing what my RPM's were the other day when I had this problem. I don't think it came up to full WOT (4600 rpm's) maybe more like 3000 rpm's.

I know that the gas in it (35 gal in 40 gal tank) is over a year old and although I treated it with Stabil last fall, I needed to have the engine's water pump repaired this spring and the other day was the first time I'd had it on the water since early last summer.

Could the gas be the whole problem with poor acceleration? It's been a few years since I've replaced the fuel filter and checked out the carb and as I'm writing this now, I'm already figuring out I need to look those tomorrow. I had started it up in the driveway the other day before I took it to the lake and it seemed to run OK and not bog down when I reved it up in neutral. (I'd never put it in gear then or I might've found out about it wanting to stick in gear.)

I've read quite a few posts about this same thing and thought it might be the gas causing the whole acceleration issue but I thought I'd post this and see what some of you might have to say. Thanks in advance for any help or replies to my post and once again, I really appreciate all the help you already given me. Best regards........

Re: Poor performance when accelerating

yeah, fuel/filters could most definitely be your problem

running on the muffs in the driveway and revving in nuetral tells you nothing about performance - need to be in the water under a load to notice any issues

probably time for a FULL tune-up including plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, condenser, fuel filters, fresh fuel, set dwell and timing

Look inside your distributor, remove the cap, do you see a broken spring, I just found that my advance timing spring rusted, broke. I bought a new spring on EBAY for 6 dollars. You check the timing?
