so i changed my prop last night, on my 1993 rude 120.

my question is, should i just hand tighten the nut and slip the pin through ie the nut will be loose?

or do i grab a socket and crank her a little more to get to the tight setting and then slide the pin through.

when i took the other prop off i was able to back the nut off without any tools

Re: pop tightness

I think you answered your question. If all seemed normal on removal do it the same.I think i would snug it and then back off to finger tight.

Re: pop tightness

what is the correct method though? is the nut supposed to be loose ie just floating there or is it supposed to be tightened on the shaft?

Re: pop tightness

My 2004 4-stroke Johnson 115 hp specs for 40 ft lbs on that prop nut. 40 ft lbs is about finger tight plus tighter to the next slot in the castle nut to slip the pin through.

While not the same motor as you, I find it questionable that it is only finger tight.

Re: pop tightness

I think Mercruiser reccomends 60lb on the tourque wrench for prop nuts.

Re: pop tightness

My 90 hp Merc Serv Man states 55 ft-lbs.

Back in the days of the shear pins, they rattled a little, but those were small engines.

I don't think you want it loose because being loose allows for back and forth motion to wear out the interface.

Re: pop tightness

so the consensus seems to be that the nut should be tightened until snug,

snug being around 50lb's of tourqe.

Re: pop tightness

50lbs is a basic industry std.
as for 40lbs being finger-tight, that would be a 12" wrench with 40lbs hanging on it..I doubt we could get that by hand.
The thrust washer has to be well seated against the hub.
I'd go 45 ft-lbs, check the hole...if it doesn't line-up, tighten to the one it will.
