1988 150 blk max
I just took the poppet valve off the motor. It had sand inbedded in the diaphragm. Had seaweed in the spring. The marina said the parts have to ordered individually. I thought a post metioned a kit? It seems the diaphragm is the only part that looks questionable on mine.
Thanks, Dead Eye

Re: Poppet Question

I believe I had to order all the parts seperately also... I might have been the one who mentioned a kit, If I did I apologize for the error.

But after I got them, I only ended up replacing the diaphram and a gasket. Quicksilver part# 64877 for the diaphram. You might want to also replace the grommet that fits into the carrier. The Carrier is the round hard plastic piece that fits into the recessed area of the block and the grommet fits inside the carrier.

Re: Poppet Question

Dead Eye: If yours is the 4 bolt cover poppet- that kit comes complete "if its just like mine '96 200hp"> Kit # 803062T1 $24.15 Merc Parts Express- got mine from RickRacers.com $15.96. Replaced everything except carrier since I had it. Just that diaphragm is about $10.00 so I thought why not the whole kit. Don't know, if yours is two bolt. Check MercuryMarine.com, put in S/N # and check what you need to.

:)

Re: Poppet Question

Put a new diaphrgm in today. Still don't if that will correct the idle tell-tale spurting.{rain stopped my work will test tommorow} When i pulled the diaphragm out the housing was loaded up with salt. sanded it all down and installed it. What would cause a 1/2 inch of salt build up?
I had the boat in the water for about 2 mths. last season , How long would you estimate the buildup to accur? How do i flush the motor at the dock?
Thanks , Dead Eye

Re: Poppet Question

SALT!!!!

I should have noticed where you are living....

The poppet valve is basically a pressure release valve... If you are running the motor in salt water, think about it.
Look at where the salt was built up... When the pressure builds up water enters through the grommet around the poppet. Water that is left in there will eventualy leave the residue...

It sounds like (to me) this engine has had extensive running in salt water... The best way to prevent further buildup is to remove the poppet regularly and clean, and flush the engine with water off the gargen hose to take care of the rest of the water jacket areas...

Re: Poppet Question

If there was salt buildup in the poppet there will be some kind of build up under the water jacket. Or even in the motor?
Thanks, Dead Eye

Re: Poppet Question

What a difference a poppet makes. Good steady stream comming out of the tell-tale. Water temp after 1/2 hr. was 120 , is that ok?
Thanks, Dead Eye

Re: Poppet Question

Beautiful.... :D

The poppet was obviously stuck open...
If you have access to fresh water at your dock and a garden hose, you can probably raise your motor up and attach the muffs...

I don't see a problem doing that regularly to flush it???
Someone else may know if running the engine raised on muffs is a concern...

Re: Poppet Question

I was getting sputtering tell-tale on my 89 200 Merc, so I put the water hose up tight against the opening (with the motor off)a sprayed water into it, water came out through the exhaust and lower holes by the cavatitation plate. I now have a strong pee indicater and temperature is back to normal feel, so I must have had something stuck somewhere that broke free. I run 100% saltwater and flush after every trip.
