Poppet valve?

1983 Merc 150. When reinstalling the poppet valve, is there suppose to be some pressure on the spring? I'm having a memory lapse here.

The spring just holds the valve closed with a couple of lbs. preload--Bob

So are you saying when I put it back in, it shouldn't be hitting anything or will the last 1/4" or so be compressing the spring a little?
