hi all, i need some info. i have a 9.9 hatsu that runs great, but it pops out of forward, idle to full throttle. it doesnt pop out of reverse. i assume a gear is stripped or teeth r missing? in the lower unit? does anyone know how hard of a job that would be for me to repair myself? ie, is it easy or should i take it to someone? or am i not even close with my assumption?

Re: popping out of forward

What is your model/serial?

Most of these are non-adjustable shift linkages, but if yours is one that is adjustable, and if it is incorrectly adjusted, the shift cam may not be allowing full engagement of the A gear. Running that way for any length of time can damage the clutch dog and its associated lugs on the gear, so checking the shift rod adjustment is prudent.

In the event that there is LU wear, the odds are that you will need the A (fwd) and B (pinion) gear in addition to a clutch dog. In the event you do change gears, the backlash must be set with the correct shims. That requires a dial indicator and a few specialty tools, so is best done by someone with those tools and expertise.
