This is an '86 Bayliner 14' with a 50 hp motor. When it begins to accelerate it seems like the bow goes up excessively causing it to accelerate really slowly until it starts to plane. What's the cause of this and how do I fix it?

Thank you all!!

Re: porpoising?

Your title is porpoising, your question is about "hole shot" or in other words getting on plane. In either case it is a boat handling issue and more informantion regarding the general performance would help. Ie; how many people on board, equipment, how does it run when on plane?

DO a search on Trim Tabs, Smart Tabs, Props etc.

Re: porpoising?

Common complaint with smaller boats and large motors. Some people, myself included, install aftermarket fins (whale tail) on the antiventilation plate of the motor. Worked great for me. MUCH MUCH better hole shot and reduced porpoising (bow rising and falling once on plane). Still some limitations so I am going to install home-made trim tabs. Lots of info on this site if you search for trim tabs or whale tail.
