Hey,does anyone know what the penalty is if you are caught with a porta pottie on your boat. I know that they are illegal in Canada, but was wondering what if any $$ penalties there are.

Well Frogman2, you are correct that porta potties without pump out connections are illegal in Canada.
If your boat has pump out capability then it is O.K. and legal.

My Bowrider does have the hoses and fittings that connect to the pottie plus the thru hull pump out connections so my dealer never brought this issue to my attention.

As for the dollar value of the fine from the Canadian Ministry of the Enviroment, my dealer told me that he doesn't think the government would confiscate the boat but hw warned "it wasn't cheap!"

Sorry I couldn't tie up that last lose end for you.
M.F.

I am glad I saw this message. My wife and I were going to Canada (Long Point area from Pa. and Trent-Severn this summer, but not now. We sleep on our 19' cuddy with camper top, it does not have a pump out. P.C.

Seems kind of a crazy rule. I guess we just take a dump over the side then. There are many, many people that use them here in my part of Canada and I have not heard of any issues from our authorities. Maybe I am just a little deaf though !!!

It's definitely illegal to have a porti potti in Ontario unless it's attached to a pump out fitting. I believe the fine is around $100, general type of fine for not having the right kind or faulty equipment. Of course chances of being caught would be small but how do you dump it otherwise today? over the side or remove it and carry to a dump facility?

is there some kinda of special porta pottie up there with pumpout fittings ?

It seems like a standard one would make a nasty mess

Don't think they are special but the bottom part of the toilet is the holding tank and it has 2 fittings to attach the pumpout line and the vent line too. Such as this one

3 gallon capacity. The 964MSD/965MSD comes with a 1-1/2" hose adapter and 5/8" vent hose adapter. Has multiple installation capability. Includes stainless steel hold down brackets. Can also be used as a portable. SIZE: 14-1/2"wide X 16-1/2"deep X 12"tall.

I stand corrected. This is probably what I was referring to.

Here, it is illegal to have the potty attached to a thru-hull.
If it is, the thru hull must be permanently sealed, to prevent you from pumping sewage into the lake.

Thru-deck clean out lines are permitted.

Portable Toilets
Portable toilets are illegal on Ontario waters.

The owner of a pleasure craft shall ensure that each toilet and the holding tank(s) is/are installed so that;

The toilet and equipment are connected in such a manner that the equipment receives all toilet waste from the toilet.
Equipment designed for the storage of human excrement is provided with a deck fitting and such connecting piping as is necessary for the removal of toilet waste by shore-based pumping equipment.
No means of removal of toilet waste is provided other than the means mentioned above.
All parts of the system for removal of toilet waste are congruent with one another and the boat.

The above is from a Canadian government website http://www.tc.gc.ca/BoatingSafety/facts/foreign.htm

Sounds pretty stupid that you can not carry a porta-pottie from your boat to an on shore toilet for proper disposal.

I bet dollars to donuts the marina industry got that rule enacted for the pump out service $$.

Sad to say BUT i bet people were dumping them in the lake

I was on Block Island at a marina with perfect land based heads and saw someone go below and take a dump dirrectly onto the shell fishing beds

yes the water is that clear that you could see it sink

Did they have a hole in the bottom of their boat? Usually the macerator turns it into chum.

There are plenty of older boats with plumbing that goes right out the through hull and do not have a new fangled macerator :)

When i was young the bathrooms were dirrectly over the lakes on the docks in Tenn :(
