Portable Gas Tank (different kinds)

I was looking at portable gas tanks at a dealer. I didn't realize there are different types. One was the basic type, you open the vent when you are of the water. The other automatically vents itself. Are these worth the extra money?

The manual vent models are crap, in my opinion. Close it when you go home and if the temp gets low at night when the tank is low, the pressure change causes the tank to implode. Then you have to vent it again and wait for a hot day to close it so it pops back out. Mine is (was) a Tempo tank, so its not a cheap one. I had to leave the vent open all the time. Plus, if you are not real astute about your equipment, if you leave it closed and forget, you'll run out of gas about a minute after you leave the dock.

I threw mine away and went back to a self venting metal tank.

Re: Portable Gas Tank (different kinds)

I have 4 of the manual vent tanks and have had no problems. Well one time I forgot to open it. I leave it open all the time, unless I'm taking a long trip. Most of my trips to the launch are one mile.

I have older plastic tanks and have never had one implode, maybe the newer ones are not as thick. As I get older maybe I will switch to the auto vent, as I seem to have more times when the CRS syndrome kicks in.

I have 2 Yamaha tanks, really not cheap although I got them from work for free, that are manual vent and they work fine, I just never close the vent.

Seems to me I would rather have manual, the auto one could eventually malfunction and be stuck open or closed so I would stay with the manual.

i've always just left the top loose, starting withmetal tanks in the early 60's. Just second nature. I don't like the caps with the littl event in the middle of the cap b/c I think they can let rain water in.
