The boat is a 1984 Starcraft Islander 191

1984 3.0 Mercruiser with Alpha 1 Outdrive. As far as I know, all is original. Motor rebuilt about 4-years ago, so the previous owner stated. I am new to this forum and am a rookie boater, but am a DIY person.

The carb on it looks altered (Homemade gas line, manual choke cable, etc...)

There also is a taped up wire at the carb, looks like it used to electric choked??

The boat starts real hard, seems to also have a power issue with the recommended prop on it. Once started it runs OK but the motor loads up if trolling at low RPM's.

Can someone tell me what the proper carb should be for this? Should it be an electric choke? What other info should I get to determine the current carb and what should be on it?

Not sure if it should be an electric or a vacumn choke, but it probably wouldn't be manual! Could be any number of issues besides the carb but a 26 year old motoro will probably be somewhat tempramental.

How can I tell what the proper carb should be? I am confident that whats on there is wrong.

With all the parts that came with boat is a new Rochester with Electric Choke. I'll try to get the model tonight and re-post

1984 Mercruiser carb specs. Yours would originally have had an electric choke Rochester 17043184 or 17059052 depending on your engine's serial number:

This is perfect. Thanks 45Auto!!!

Next question: Whats the likely hood the carb will not need tinkering out of the box, brand new??

Theses motors are pretty simple. Should be able to bolt on, adjust and go. Of course with modified gas line, etc. this may be more difficult. At best once on it will expose other things with the motor that need attention to.

Good Luck!

Re: Possible 3.0 Carb issue.

With the current carb the motor runs great once warmed up. The loading up issue at low RPM is annoying but after I open it up it is fine for a bit.

I did change the prop to account for the power loss. Needed to get the kids tubing and get some fishing in. I hope this is the carb problem and I can get back to the original prop.

I might try the Rochester this weekend, but am nervous I will end up in the "tinkering" stage and not get out tubing or fishing again.

Even though it is currently not set-up right, at least we can get in the water.

If I re-connect the electric choke on the new carb does it need to have a seperate ground wire or is it grounded through the engine?

I understand. It's grounded through the engine.

Re: Possible 3.0 Carb issue.

OK Got some better data now.

Engine ser# is 6829350
Current Carb is 13898490
New Roch Carb in box is 7041139 05711R1

So it appears the previous owner brought the Rochester based on the carb thats on the engine.

It also appears that the carb on the engine is wrong.

So, I have two carbs that won't work???

Can someone confirm if the new Rochester I have will work?
