Possible Fuel Tank Problems

Hey guys-
I have an 84 75HP Chrysler. I have cans for fuel tanks, no hull tanks. I have 3 older 6 gallon metal Tempo fuel tanks that I have been running with it. At the end of last season I bought a new 12 gallon plastic Tempo tank. I ran it a few times last season with the 12 gallon tank on it, no problems. When I winterized I pumped all the fuel out of the tanks and stored them pretty much dry for the winter.

This year I filled up the new 12 gallon tank and one 6 gallon metal and hit the water. I hooked up the 12 gallon to the fuel line and went to WOT. The motor ran great for about a minute or two then start to spit and sputter and bog down a bit. I pulled the throttle back down to about 3/4 and no probs, ran like it is supposed to. I switched to the old 6 gallon metal and went to WOT and no problems. Ran just like it was supposed to. Switched back to the 12 gallon went to WOT and spit and sputter again. The next time I went out took another of the older cans and no problems and same problem with the 12 gallon plastic tank. I came back in and removed the fitting that holds the fuel line connector and pick up for the tank. It is clear and has no obstructions. I made sure the vent screw was open and I even ran with the gas cap all the way off. In May I put a new fuel pump diaphram in. I would think this is a simple problem, but it is driving me nuts.

I was thinking of swaping one of the male connectors from one of my old tanks on to the new tank and see if that helps. Does the fuel pump have enough guts to pump out of a bigger tank? Other than this quirk the motor runs perfect. It is easy to start, good idle, and good top end.

think I would try switching out the tank line and connector with the known good system from the smaller tank. If the motor runs well, you know it's not the tank -- maybe a leaking o-ring on a connector. If the motor still doesn't run off the larger tank, you might suspect in intake obstruction.

I am leaning toward an obstruction or air leak in the fuel line or bulb.

Hmm. I don't suspect fuel line or bulb because it is the same line that goes to the smaller tank.

OK, then I wouuld think the fuel line to tank connection is likely drawing in a small amount of air.

Roscoe, you were correct. I replaced the the female connector on the fuel line and that cured my problems. The old connector's o-ring looked a little suspect. New fuel line, connectors, clamps and a new prop this weekend. Once again thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
