Mates,
I'm running a 1995 3 cylinder 2 cycle Mercury 60 hp. I stored it properly over the winter, I've had it out 4 times this spring with no problem. Took it for the 5th trip out, but she was a no-start at the dock. (trying to take the wife out for her first cruise of 2008...I felt bad) Battery fully charged, it's turning over like crazy, but seems to have no spark. After looking it over for obvious physical problems, I shot some starting fluid in the carbs just to see if maybe the fuel wasn't getting in there properly. Cranked it, and nothing, didn't even think of burning that fuel. Took her home and just to relieve my mind, I did a compression check...all cylinders are exactly 109. There is a 20 amp fuse near the electrical system, it was not blown but I replaced it anyhow, just FYI. The spark plugs do not look bad at all. A tiny bit of fuel on them, but not really "wet". They do not look worn at all, and were put in last summer. I have the Seloc manual, and my opinion is that this manual does not show the configuration of my particular motor guts (since it covers a wide hp range I suppose), and the guidance provided assumes some level of working knowledge and 'motor speak', which I have very little of. I know the operational and storage procedures, but I've not taken a motor apart...with the sole exception of bench cleaning and rebuilding the carbs. That's it.
If you can suggest the simple things I can check first, and what tools I would need, please do. If you tell me to do something with this wire or that wire, lift the johnson rod, disconnect the smith cable...etc...I may not know what you mean, so please point it out in one of my pics, or suggest another picture angle and I'll post it. I'm willing to get my hands all greasy and turn some wrenches...but being new to the neighborhood where I now live, there are very few lakes, and I've not met anyone with an outboard mechanic friend or trustworthy shop to refer me to as of yet. (Greenville, SC) Any help is appreciated.
