I have a 1992 Evinrude 80 Jet (115hp powerhead)that needs to be rebuilt.I found a 1984 Evinrude 115 with "low hours" for alot less than the shop wants to rebuild mine.IF it runs out well, are the powerheads swap-able ? My motor is a long shaft with a pump, and the possible donor is a short shaft prop.

Welcome Bill - It would help our experts if you posted the model numbers of both powerheads.

Sorry , not thinking, The model # on the 92 is E115JLEN-JET, the model # on the 84 I'm told is E115TXCR I hope this will help.

Re: Possible powerhead swap

A direct swap. However -- (dont ya just love that part??) -- The driveshaft spline O ring on your 1992 is in the crank. The 1984 has the O ring on the driveshaft.

So, if we install the 84 powerhead on the 92 driveshaft there will be no O ring for the splines.

Thats not so bad IF we drop the unit and grease the splines every year like we should. It been done before. A lot.

Naturally we could swap cranks but then we might as well rebuild what we have. If it were mine, I wouldn't hesitate. Just remember the "That's not so bad" deal.

Re: Possible powerhead swap

The O ring keeps water from getting on the splines and causing rust or corrision. It also helps keep the grease there to protect aginst wear.

I've never seen an interchange guide listed anywhere.

Thanks for the info about the O-rings job.It turns out that possible donor is a 83(mod. E115TLCTE) not an 84,do I still have a swapable combo?
When I look at the motor I intend to check the compression.Should it be done cold?,Hot?,both?,and what is a reasonable number to be looking for?

Thanks Again
Bill

Re: Possible powerhead swap

You're still Ok with the 83, no difference between the 83 & 84.

The compression can be done any way you like. Hot or cold. Just look for no more of a difference than 15 lbs high to low. We're not so concerned about the actual number, just the difference. And however you take the initial compression, do it the same way with the same gauge all the time. that way any changes reamin in the motor rather than from proceedure or a different gauge.
