Two years ago my 89' 200hp V6 Black max burnt out on me, long story no need to go into it. So I bought a rebuilt 88' 200hp V6 carberated. However, my boats transom is 20'' and the shaft on the 88' i was going to buy was 25''. So I think the mechanic used the shaft from my 89' and placed the 88' powerhead on that.

Question: How can I figure out the serial number of my 88'. I know the serial numbers are on the back of the mounting brackets. But wouldn't those be for the 89'. I need help here because I want to order a factory manual from mercury for my engine and I need the serial numbers. If I am lucky they have an 88-89' edition. I am ordering one because I am worried about the talk of Seloc manuals having many mistakes.

Also, I am taking apart my carbs for cleaning and new gaskets. Are there certain things to be extra careful of?

Thanks so much. Everyone here has been of great help.

Not 100% sure but most engine got the serial on top of the block near the head , it's stampt into the block .
