Possible Stator problem with 15HP Evinrude

Over the last few years this '86 outboard has been problematic. I'm now told that it will sometimes slow down (very intermittant) but eventually recover w/o doing anything.
The guy who told me about this said he was talking to someone about that and the other guy said his outboard was also doing the same thing and cured by replacing the stator. Sound likely?


A couple years ago it had no spark and I found a couple broken wires near the flywheel, broken from moving with accel/decel. I repaired those wires then.

This outboards had the carb rebuilt, fuel pump rebuilt, new gas tank and supply hose so I wouldn't think it could still be fuel related.

Opinions? Does still have the original stator.

Considering that it's been doing this for a while AND that I've tryed replacing ALL fuel system parts, I highly doubt that it's STILL fuel related.

I googled the topic of stator related outboard problems and yes, does look possible BUT......again I'd be just guessing.

This time, I'd prefer to take it to a Marine dealer for thier opinion and if nothing else, maybe it's time to part with this outboard?

Sorry I can't anwser it for you and it's odd you didn't get an answer. Many times there are so many questions being asked this time of year that some get lost and are so far down the list so fast that the right people don't see them.

just a shot in the dark,check the coils carefully and look for any cracks.cracks equal bad coils.yes ive also heard of the stator problem but it was on a 1975 15 not your year.

Your symptoms sound to me like you've got a cylinder cutting out. That's more likely a bad coil or plug wire.
