Possible to update point to electronic ignition

I have a 1962 evinrude 28hp speeditwin.
I was wondering if there is a known way to swap the points for an electronic style ignition. I know they make conversion kits for lawnmower type engines, it seems they would be available for outboards also...?

Would it be possible to use the little conversion kits from the briggs type motors? (thinking out load here..)

There are (or at least were) kits available for outboards. Beats me why anybody would want to though. That OMC Universal magneto was the most popular and reliable system ever made, and used for about 30 years on a bazillion motors. But I geuss it takes all kinds of people to make the world go around.

I don't know but guys are doing it to their inboards everyday, I guess it's an upgrade to a improved spark, hotter and precise duruation, I myself like simple points and condenser, no electronics to fail. If it were an all out competition style engine then it may just be the difference between winning and loosing.
I'm sorta neutral on the upgrade, still have points on my I/O and outboards. But I have to say, the pertronix conversion to my FE 428 Ford made a noticable improvement, starts instantly and spot on through 6,500 RPM.
It doesn't get much simpler and the best bang for the buck I say go for it, you can always keep a set of points and consdenser on board so if it burns out your not dead ship. Im thinking on my old 67' battery type ignition the upgrade could make a noticable improvement on idle and slow troll, don't really care about anything else.

Yes, there are electronic triggers that can replace points and condensors. They may even be the ones that you are talking about. I get mine from the following source. See "Nova II Electronic Transistorized Ignition Module."

As to why anyone would want to make this conversion, its pretty simple - no more points and condensors to replace and no more worries about adjustment.

I have a 1969 Johnson 6hp motor that has had a pair in it for about 4 years. It still runs fine. One warning, however - don't try to use them in a motor that has more than one magnet in the flywheel. If you do, your going to end up with an outboard that is seriously "confused."

As for reliability, they have never failed me and one of them was under water for a couple of weeks following Hurricane Katrina, before I installed it and its mate in my motor. I was also told about these units by someone who has been using them for years. When I asked him how long they typically last, he said "I don't know, Ive never had one fail."

Thanks for all the replies and helpful info. I will look into the Nova kit, it looks like it may be the ticket.
