Hello all. I have a 1982 gulfstream boat equiped with a 3.8 omc motor a rochester 2gc carb and the stringer 800 mechanical shift drive. My boat has ran great for me for years now until this weekend. it ran perfectly last weekend and often times at wot for 5 to 10 minutes straight. Upon leaving the last stop we made fishing this weekend i gave it throttle to plane and get headed back to the dock. the motor sounded like it was flooded and shruddered bogging but kept going slowly at full throttle. when put in neutral it idles perfectly and revs up no problem. the boat starts with a turn of the key as well first time every time. F Y I it did do this shruddering a couple times before but i would just put it in neutral with engine running and then shift back to forward and the problem would dissapear. Now it will not dissapear and i limped back to the dock at 1100 rpms in gear luckily. Any thoughts gentlemen. Thanks in advance, Full stringer.

From what I have read, OMC's down fall was the shift cable. That is, the cable in conjunction with ESA. Not sure if that applies to the Stringer but definitely the Cobras. Maybe the experts on here missed your post but your description is a little vague. Quote: "the motor sounded like it was flooded and shruddered bogging but kept going slowly at full throttle". Does flooded and shuddering mean it was Mis-firing at FULL throttle? Shuddering and bogging at initial acceleration definitely sounds like a shift cable adjustment or ESA issue but not usually at full throttle. Maybe someone else will chime in now.

That probably is not an ESA or shift cable problem. Sounds fuel related. Most obvious is you might have purchased some bad fuel. Other areas might be fuel filters or something plugging up the carb. Do you have an original manual?

Unplug your ESA unit and see if anything changes... Also, replace your fuel filter...
