Possibly running rich after MerCarb 2 barrel rebuild?

Not quite sure if this is "normal" or not, so I am going to ask. I did the rebuild on the '96 MerCarb 2 barrel rebuild about 3 weeks ago. I dunked it for about 3 days before I rebuilt it to the spec the carb kit and the manual stated. I set the "mixture" screw to 1-1/4 turns out from seat using a deep well socket and my fingers to make it "lightly seat". I set the "idle" screw to 2 turns clockwise after it initially touched the cam. Took it out to the water, it started immediately and idled at 1,000 rpm. I let it warm up up to 160 degrees, turned it off, grounded my purple/white wire, restarted it and all I did was drop the "idle" screw counter clockwise by 1/4 of a turn to get to 650-750 rpms. The motor did not shake or stumble all day (6 hours of running time). Ran beautifully all day including effortless restarts. I pulled the arrestor off and noticed black "carbon" build up on the venturis. Does this soud like I am running rich and I need to turn the "mixure" screw in another 1/4 turn clockwise, putting me at 1 turn out from seat. I would think if I go counter clockwise I would be making it richer. Even using the "thicker" based gasket, I did not notice hardly any difference in turning the "mixture" screw in or out in 1/4 increments (using my shop tachometer.)

It sounds like your engine is running fairly well from your post. Did you notice any blue or black exhaust smoke ??

Several things that may help you. The mixture screw ONLY affects the idle mixture. When the rpms go over about 1k your running off the venturis. Venturi mixture is controlled by internal jets ( orafice size etc ) .

The black carbon on the venturis you describe is not a symptom of a rich mixture. Black exhaust smoke is what to look for if your running rich. Blue means the engine has excessive oil in the cylinders.

As far as the source of the black carbon building up quickly -I have never seen that before but wonder if It could be blow by from the engine crankcase, Oily buildup & debris off the spark arrestor ( clean with solvents & compressed air as needed ) or other?

How old are your belts? Worn belts (or belts that are slipping) can cause a black dust that gets sucked through the spark arrestor.

Good point Rusty pulleys can cause quick wear on belts.

FYI
I used the POR 15 pocess which includes an acid ectch & apllication of a special paint that dies very hard. So far I am very impressed.

Cheaper than new pulleys by far. No more belt dust on the engine cover. Rapid wear resolved.
