post rebuild question

hey all,i have a bit of an issue after rebuild. the motor doesnt want to start w/o pouring some premix into the carbs. once i do it fires and runs great. what are the obvious things to troubleshoot. carbs have been rebuilt just prior to rebuild ,ran 3 times. wasnt able to do a thorough link n sync on test run,it was to choppy.but timing was right on according to manual specs at the proper rpm's. i did replace the fuel lines to carbs but reused a couple old oem clamps. fuel pump was replaced last year.
could it possibly be loose clamps causing low fuel pressure?
also noticed the new squeeze ball has a bit of a leak at the factory compression clamp.
what would you check? im trying to get my game plan for tomorrow.

You can do a link-n-synch while it's still strapped to the trailer. Makes it much easier. Pretend the lake is a giant test tank.

Is your choke behaving properly? Other than that I'd say you've got some fine things to check with leaks in the fuel lines.

do i have to have it in gear or can i work the throttle linkage by hand to achieve proper rpm? man thats gonna be loud!

oh yeah,yes choke is working. does this sound totally like an air leak issue?

I would suspect a carb problem.Floats out of adjustment.Carbs not absolutely clean.All jets and passages should be cleaned and checked.If you squeeze the primer until firm set the throttle crank it with the choke it should start. If a gas line was sucking air it would affect it after it starts.If the choke doesn't close properly it wont start if you operate the choke when it is idling it should flood and stall.And should act flooded when you restart.

Chokes probably are not 100% closed as required for a cold start.

Any air leak will cause the motor to run lean and can seriously damage the engine. There is nowhere for air to go except through the engine.

try closing the choke manually by hand and let someone crank it. The choke solonoid might not be pulling right.They do adjust .Yours probably slides in the holder clamp

well heres another thing that i noticed. when i lower the motor from the stowed position on my trailer to run position,fuel pours out from the bottom motor cover as if the carbs are draining out. what does this usually mean and could it be a cause/result of my hard start problem. as i said before the carbs were recently rebuilt and i kept them covered during engine rebuild. there is a chance some dust got in there but didnt appear to be when i put them back on.
your thoughts?

Do the link and sinc. When that motor is tilted up to the lock it will slobber fuel from the carbs. Then when you lower it back down the puddle of fuel in the lower pan will run down the front of leg on mid section. Use an OMC (Bombardier) squeeze bulb and fuel line. The aftermarket ones just are not as good.

It may be as simple as not getting the carb bowls full prior to cranking.

If the fuel leaking out of the lower cover is clear, as though it came from the fuel system, either your carburetor's float valve assembly is not functioning or you have a fuel leak.

I recommend that you disconnect your fuel line when you have the motor tilted for trailering.
